July 12: Almost Sick with Optimisim
I knew that the Kontas were awesome the first moment I met them, but I didn't know just how awesome.
After I had finished my blog last night, Misato came in and asked me if I knew how to call overseas, which I didn't; then she left and came back like ten minutes later with the house phone and a number to use to call numbers in the US. Apparently since I had told them I missed my mom, in passing, they wanted to let me call her and talk to her. I asked them how much it would be to call overseas and they wouldn't tell me--they told me not to worry about it and just to call her! I about cried. So I called Mom and we talked and I've decided I'm going to get their address so I can send them lots of American goodies when I get back as thanks. I'm really so grateful to have gotten placed with this family, I can't express how much I love them already!
This morning I woke up, got ready and had breakfast (perfect portions of everything I like), then walked to Numata since it was threatening rain and it's no fun to bike in rain. It didn't end up raining during the times I was going to or coming home from school though, but it was a nice walk anyway.
I was with the second graders second and third period and a fifth grade class fourth period. Let me just take a moment here to rant about how the fifth grade teacher never prepares anything for class. Everything is all helter-skelter and he wastes probably half the class time doing things like cutting out papers to put on the board that he could have done beforehand. Ugh. But whatever.
After lunch I walked home and worked on uploading some more pictures. Obaa-san brought me some grapefruit as a snack, which I was really grateful for because lunch at school was mostly meat so I hadn't really eaten much more than a small bowl of rice, a couple sips of soup and a few veggies and was pretty hungry. Then I napped because I was sleepy, and after I woke up I went with Misato to their garden and picked some eggplants for dinner. It was really cool to be able to harvest my own food!
After that Misato put on Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for me to watch, and then we had dinner. After dinner, Eiko (not Eriko, my bad) and I went on a really long walk (an hour and a half! This woman has energy, just the kind I love), and talked about a lot of stuff. We just got back actually, and I knew I had to sit down and blog about how awesome this host family is, and how they've completely refreshed me in only a day of being with them. I can even put up with the obnoxious elementary schoolers, knowing that I get to come home to such awesome people!
Friday's gonna be fun--Nicola and some other JETs are having a small good-bye dinner since this is their last year doing the program, and she invited me to come along so I'm going. I can't wait! I really can't believe how much my feelings have turned around in the last twenty-four hours. I feel like I'm getting back to myself again.
